Ancestral Techniques: Repoussé, Chasing, Kiln Enameling

Out of a need to recover the application of ancestral techniques such as repoussé, chasing and kiln enameling, resulting in contemporary jewels with a language and identity of their own.

The repoussé technique was already known in the time of Mesopotamia and Anatolia at the end of the third millennium BCE.

In antiquity this technique was used to make statues of large dimensions

The art of chasing has been used on metals such as gold, silver, bronze and copper to make objects such as chests and plates, as well as for the decoration of armor.

The first ornamental techniques derived from measured blows adopted for modeling. It was common to add lines and grooves on the metal, obtained by repeated blows on the surface, producing various types of relief decoration. This technique was used until it reached its highest expression in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries in the production of religious objects and gold and silver utensils.

The art of enameling has very ancient origins. When people came to know glass, they also came to know enamel. It was used as a vitreous paste linked to gold, imitating precious stones that in antiquity were attributed talismanic powers.

In Asia and in Europe, many centuries before Christ, enameling gave life to a tradition of its own, linked to the goldsmith’s art and to jewelry, producing particularly precious objects, treasures of the Cathedrals, destined for emperors and kings and enriching the collections of nobles and wealthy burghers. Objects of gold or silver in which enamels illuminated the surfaces with exceptional colors.

Identidad en Plata

“Culture translated into material expression makes the user identify with it, turn it into a symbol and make a value judgment” (MAURICIO SÁNCHEZ VALENCIA, JULIO SUÁREZ OTALORA, 2014). This deep relationship between people and objects, in which the integration of the person into the world and into social structures is summed up, is what confers status and allows the JEWEL to enter a system of signs and take on symbolic value because it is a UNIQUE DESIGN. Its function is materialized through the combination of materials and it benefits from a mutualism with the user. Because the JEWEL has a meaning and a conceptual value, a dialogue is generated between it and the user through specific messages that are legible only in that given context, in which materiality and innovation from the material are revalued. Morphological and constructive development become a key element, and sensitivity arises, allowing one to enjoy that relationship of living, existing and delighting with naturalness, of facing the human being with life, as memories are anchored, being a support of time. Meaning has been a support of existence that is made to be lived, creating a continuity that is maintained over time.
